TIME
Concept:
We are often unaware of how fast time passes us by.
Roger Waters: Listening back, the thing that most surprised me was how long
the intro to 'Time' is. I got this feeling that there was a serious lack
of panic about losing the listener's interest. Comment:
The term 'quiet desperation' is from pioneering conservationlist Henry David
Thoreau's 'Walden (1854)'. The song's cultural ties are further strengthened
by a naked guitarist singing the opening lines in a soft-porn movie The
Joy of Mykonos. Comment:
Early live versions used the lyric "Lying supine in the sun," which was
replaced late in the sessions by Roger Waters, who changed the lyric to
"Tired of lying in the sunshine." In early live performances the line "Laying
supine in the sunshine" was used. Comment:
The clock sound effects were recorded with a small Usher portable tape recorder
by Alan Parsons at a St.John's Wood antique clock shop for Abbey Road Studio's
sound library and a quadraphonic sound effects record. Each clock was recorded
individually and Parsons blended them together to chime at the same time.
