THE
LAST FEW BRICKS
James
Guthrie:Then there's "The Last Few Bricks," the penultimate song on
Disc One, which didn't appear on the original album or in the movie.
"It's basically a medley of pieces from everything that's happened up
to that point," Guthrie explains. "There are bits of 'Empty
Spaces,' 'Young Lust,' the other
'Brick' songs ... it's a musical medley." "The reason it's there is
that the staging of the show had to be timed perfectly, because they
were building a wall between the stage and the audience, and the wall
had to be completed by the end of the first half - the end of
'Goodbye Cruel World.' There was no way they could get enough of
it built in time, so 'The Last Few Bricks' was an instrumental medley
that was put in specifically to allow the wall builders to catch up.
"It was always referred to as just 'The Medley,' but I didn't want to
call it a medley on the album, so I phoned Roger
(Waters) up and said, 'Look, there's got to be a more interesting
title for this; it's a really nice piece of music.' He thought about
it and - remembering that we did it specifically to allow the wall builders
to catch up - said, 'Let's call it "The Last Few Bricks." ' So I said,
'Great.' "
