THE
GUNNER'S DREAM
Concept:
A dream of war veterans that the sacrifices they made will lead to a better
society. Comment:
The line " Maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control" refers
to the summer of 1982, when the Royal
Green Jackets band was playing a concert in Regent's
Park and a bomb that had been planted under the stage by the Irish
Republican Army exploded, killing 6 and injuring 28, most of them band
members.
Comment: The
Soldier, a sonnet written in 1914 by Rupert
Brooke that includes the lines "If I should die, think only this of
me. That there's a corner of a foreign field that is forever England." This
was the inspiration for the words "In the corner of some foreign field"
in this song.
