ECHOES
Concept:
Origin, self, and identity. David
Gilmour: Have you ever heard that musical thing where they get a tone that
seems to go on, you know, like those Escher paintings where the staircases
go up and up and up, never getting anywhere? Well, there's a tone and it
keeps going 'ding ding ding ding', and up and up and the same time they
are surreptitiosly taking out high frequencies, so that it never gets anywhere.
That's what the choir on the end does right on the very end of 'Echoes'. Roger
Waters: Up until then, I think I was still stuck with all the airy fairy
bollocks from the 60's
Comment: Echoes was used as the soundtrack to a portion of the movie "Crystal
Voyager" (1971), and during concerts in 1970s, scenes from the movie were
used as a backdrop for this song. Comment:
This song had several alternate titles, such as, "Nothing-Parts 1-24" which
was a working title, "We Won The Double" proposed by Roger Waters,"Return
Of The Son of Nothing" original concert title in 1971, "Looking Through
the Knotholes in Grannys Wooden Leg" concert title in 1972, "The March of
the Dambusters" concert title also in 1972. The title "Echoes" was first
used on the BBC show, September 30, 1971.
Comment: Another alternate title for this song was "Nothing To The Sun And
Back".
