CAREFUL
WITH THAT AXE, EUGENE
Concept:
A violent reaction to an oppressive society. David
Gilmour: 'Careful With That Axe,Eugene' is basically one chord. We were
just creating textures and moods over the top of it - taking it up and down.
Not very subtle stuff. There was a sort of rule book of our own that we
were trying to play to - and it was largely about dynamics. Richard
Wright: It's not a huge message to the world, you know. We often pick titles
that have nothing really to do with the songs.
Ron Geesin: The Floyd have never incited anyone to violence, so from that
point of view they have made a contribution to the world. They were always
quite a peaceful orchestra, even with Roger screaming his head off, as he
still tends to do. Comment:
Before settling on the current title this song had several titles, such
as, "Murderistic Women" "Keep Smiling People" "Beset By The Creatures Of
The Night" and "Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up" . Comment:
This song has appeared in several movies as well, "Live At Pompeii"
"Superstars In Concert" "Heart Of The Sun" "The Comittee" and "Zabriskie
Point". Comment:
'Opening' a generic title applied to 'Careful
With That Axe, Eugene' on the bootleg "The Early Tours"
