A
SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS
Concept:
Three loosely structured instrumental sections segued together. Roger
Waters: 'A Saucerful of Secrets' allowed you to think of anything that you
wanted and, because it had echo, people thought it was science fiction,
but it could be anything Richard
Wright: We all believed it was going to be one of the best things we'd ever
put on record - which I think it was at that time. Parts of 'Saucerful'on
'Ummagumma' came from the Birmingham gig, which
we put together with the Manchester stuff..but the stuff on the album is'nt
half as good as we can play.
David Gilmour: I still think it's great. That was the first clue to our
direction forwards from there. If you take 'Saucerful of Secrets' the track
'Atom Heart Mother', then
'Echoes' - all lead quite logically towards
'Dark Side of the Moon'. Comment:
Part one is called Something Else which consists of various noises.
Part two is called Syncopated Pandemonium which consists of a repeated
drum track section .Part three is called Storm
Signal which consists of an keyboard section. Part
four is called Celestial Voices which
consists of an extended vocal section.
Comment: 'The End of the Beginning' is a song which is part of 'The
Man-The Journey' suite . It is based on a section called 'Celestial
Voices' which is a part of 'A Saucerful of Secrets'. Comment:
This song was also known as "The Massed Gadgets Of Hercules". Comment:
The structure of the piece was determined by Mason and Waters - both former
architecture students - who drew a series of peaks and troughs on a chart
to outline its dynamics. Comment:
Labels on original copies of 'Ummagumma', at
least in the USA, gave four subdivisions.Something Else; Syncopated Pandemonium;
Storm Signal and Celestial Voices, although these titles are omitted from
later vinyl pressings and the CD release.
