A Saucerful Of Secrets - Comments

COMMENTS

During the recording of 'Saucerful...', the one secret the band had been trying to keep from their public-the fragile state of Syd Barrett's mental health and his impending breakdown - became uncontainable. It was originally announced that his school friend and one time fellow busker David Gilmour would replace him for live work, with Barrett retaining responsibility for writing, but only a handful of gigs were performed as a five piece and out Barrett went. One result of these changes was an album, again produced by Norman Smith, recorded under great stress by two different line ups. Some tracks were recorded more than once, first with Barrett and then with Gilmour. Mystery has always surrounded some of these sessions, and it is thought that Barrett and Gilmour may be heard together on some tracks- after all, Gilmour was hired partly for his ability to sound like Barrett, whom he had taught to play. During the later sessions, Barrett would sit patiently in the reception area at Abbey Road, waiting to be asked to play for "his" band.
