ARNOLD
LAYNE
Comment:
About the Cambridge knicker snatcher who stole women's clothing off washing
lines.
Syd Barrett: 'Arnold Layne' is nothing but a pop record. It wasn't intended
to represent anything in particular. It's just us.
Nick Mason: We were asked to record six numbers, pick out the best two,
then find a record company that would accept them. We recorded the first
two, and they were snatched away and we were told 'That's it!' All the record
companies wanted the disc, so it was just a case of holding out for the
biggest offer. But by the time 'Arnold Layne' was released, we had already
progressed and changed our ideas about what a good hit record should be.
We tried to stop it being released, but we couldn't. Still, doesn't matter
now.
