A Great Day For Freedom

A GREAT DAY FOR FREEDOM
FACTS/COMMENTS

Concept: People experiencing new freedom, yet having their optimism give way to disappointment with the slowness of change.

Comment: The artwork for this song shows the date November 1989, when the Berlin Wall opened up. The page number in the CD booklet is "elf", which is German for eleven, shown by two little heads that look away from each other. The paper heads formed from crumpled newspaper seem to repeat the theme. Some fans have suggested that the left head represents black Americans (notice the dark face and the X, a sign of emancipation), and the right head represents the president who proclaimed their Emancipation, Abraham Lincoln, whose profile is visible.

Comment: The lyrics express the sense of frustration and disappointment that has often followed the attainment of some new freedom. David Gilmour spoke about the situation in Eastern Europe when the Berlin Wall came freeing Eastern Europe from the non-democratic side of the socialist system , only to have left the population with a situation that isn't much better.
